WHAT IS ASBESTOS AND WHY IS IT DANGEROUS?
ASBESTOS is a naturally occurring mineral made up of many small fibres. It is regarded as New Zealand’s number one workplace killer. Asbestos was added into many building products from the 50s to the 80s. Later it was discovered to be a cancer-causing agent when the fibres get lodged in human lungs. All types of asbestos can cause cancer.
To help reduce worker exposure to this carcinogen, the government introduced new Health and Safety (Asbestos) Regulations in 2016. These regulations were designed to raise the bar for the asbestos removal industry by bringing New Zealand’s approach to managing asbestos in the workplace and any associated removal into line with Australia and the UK.
There are now restrictions on the work that can be done on asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACMs). The first step in managing asbestos is to identify if it is present at your workplace. We can help you to do this.
PLACES WHERE YOU CAN EXPECT TO FIND ASBESTOS
WORK SITES AND OFFICES
Every tradesperson is likely to encounter asbestos at work sooner or later. This puts them at risk of exposure to airborne asbestos fibres. Employers have legal obligations for the health and safety of their employees making sure they are not exposed to asbestos fibres.
In industrial buildings asbestos can be found in many products, like Roof ventilators, ‘Super Six’ or ‘Super Eight’ roof sheeting, Skylight and manhole frames, Asbestos cement vent pipes and capping, Fluted ridge capping used on plain roll, fluted saddle ridge, sawtooth ridge capping and ventilating ridges, Window moulding and louvre blades, Sheeting or ceiling tiles used in the office area, kitchen, toilet walls or mezzanine area, Compressed sheet flooring, ‘Super Six’, ‘Super Eight’ or architecturally designed wall cladding, Wall sheeting or compressed sheeting, ‘Super Six’ awning, Vinyl floor tiles or sheet vinyl floor coverings, Compressed wall sheeting used for toilet partitions, Moulded telecommunications pits or electrical pits, Gully trap surrounds, Textile in the fuse holders, Backing to switchboard and internal linings, Asbestos cement downpipes, Side flashings, Window mouldings and louvre blades, Rainwater heads, Door mouldings, Gutters, Woven fencing products.
Asbestos is still in many homes, workplaces and public buildings throughout New Zealand.
Any building built before 1 January 2000 is likely to contain some form of asbestos, particularly those built, altered or refurbished between 1940 and the mid-1980s.
Even some recently-constructed buildings may have asbestos or ACMs. Asbestos and ACMs are not dangerous if they are in a good condition and remain undisturbed. We can help you determine the risk of the asbestos in your home or workplace.
People can be exposed to higher levels of airborne asbestos inside their homes than levels in outdoor air, usually because of cutting or drilling through asbestos-cement materials or sanding down asbestos-containing surfaces, linoleum or tiles during home maintenance, renovating, repair and remodelling.
Fibres are released when physical actions (deliberate or accidental) disturb the surface.
